Program Overview
Improving patient care by incorporating evidence-based research on targeted therapies into the management of patients with metastatic renal cell carcinoma (RCC) provides a challenge for the busy oncologist. Continuing education activities designed to translate clinical trial data into therapeutic strategies can provide much needed guidance.
The role of approved and emerging agents for the management of RCC continues to evolve. Approval of three targeted therapies for use as single agents represents significant progress in improved patient care. Emerging data on the sequential use of single agent therapy and potential identification of indicators for responsiveness to therapy continue to challenge the oncologist’s comfort with identifying patients most likely to respond. In addition, it has become apparent that combining targeted therapies which inhibit the same or distinct pathways, as well as using targeted therapies to enhance cytokine therapy, shows great promise. Finally, there are opportunities for the oncologist to improve patient outcomes by referral to numerous ongoing clinical trials.
