A Special Message From the Chair
Dear Colleague:
The evolution of new treatments for patients with chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML) has
proceeded at an unprecedented pace. Safety and efficacy data on imatinib, dasatinib, and
nilotinib are widely available, and guidelines and recommendations are continually updated
to keep pace with the expanding knowledge of disease epidemiology, monitoring and
testing techniques, and extended survival data.
Although practicing hematologists and oncologists may already be familiar with this
information, significant questions remain surrounding the treatment of patients with CML.
What is the best strategy to monitor patients? Does time to response matter? Do the latest
second-generation data justify using these agents in newly diagnosed patients? What is the
role of stem cell transplantation today? When is the best time to change therapy? Using a
unique dialogue format, this symposium will examine these questions, as well as the
application of the most recent data to the management of CML in clinical practice.
I hope that you will join us as we address your concerns through faculty dialogues and
panel discussions. Practicing hematologists and oncologists already know what treatments
are available; now, we must confront the remaining questions in order to provide optimal
patient care.
Sincerely,
Neil P. Shah, MD, PhD
